Developing a global mindset

I have worked with private enterprises for most of my career so far, currently focussing on corporate finance and mergers and acquisitions (M&A) transactions. I was searching for a short course that could serve three purposes for my continuous professional development:

  • advancing my knowledge and understanding of a particular interest of mine in private markets, particularly in private equity
  • developing a more global mindset in this area
  • gaining insight into the future of the industry.

With these goals in mind, and after extensive research, the Oxford Private Markets Investments Programme at Saïd Business School stood out. The course capitalised on the extensive industry and academic experience of the teaching team, led by Professor Ludovic Phalippou, and included experts from prominent institutions such as JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, the European Investment Fund, TPG and Oxford’s own endowment fund. This resulted in a well-structured and comprehensive learning experience for me and my fellow classmates.

The topics covered were delivered with an optimal blend of technical knowledge supported by academic research, as well as real-world applications and observations. We delved into understanding the roles and interaction of key participants, evaluating and adding value to private acquisitions, presenting an investment memorandum, navigating leverage buyout transactions and negotiating debt packages. Performing and critiquing private equity fund performance methods, negotiating and understanding elements of a limited partnership agreement, and immersing ourselves in the current and future trends of private markets were also covered.

Another valuable aspect of the course was the diverse cohort with whom I had the opportunity to learn, discuss and debate throughout the six weeks. Each of my fellow classmates brought their own unique experiences and perspectives to the table, creating an enriching environment that is difficult to replicate in my daily professional work. Moreover, the global prestige and reputation of Saïd Business School attracted classmates from almost every corner of the world, further enhancing the diversity and internationalism of thought in the virtual classroom.

For those considering the programme - whether you are an accountant, investor, banker, lawyer, operator, or have other professional backgrounds - if you have a deep passion for the private markets and a desire to stay up to date with current and future trends and thought leadership in this field, the programme will undoubtedly satisfy your thirst for knowledge.

In my personal experience, the course was not only interesting but also challenging. Unlike many other short courses, where completing the programme involves simply watching videos and reading materials, this one required participants to commit a meaningful amount of time each week to working on assignments and actively participating in discussion forums. This ensured that everyone thoroughly absorbed the knowledge and exercised critical thinking.

Although demanding, as most participants in our group had busy professional and personal lives, I think the experience was entirely worthwhile due to the knowledge, experience and connections we gained from being part of the programme.

Overall, my experience with the course and Saïd Business School can be described as eye-opening, relevant, challenging and global.
