Build momentum for indigenous capital

About the event

Join Gayle Peterson, Programme Director of the Oxford Social Finance Programme, as she discusses ways to leverage indigenous capital.

She is joined by impact leaders who will share their unique journeys and strategies for having a positive impact on indigenous peoples and the planet by expanding access to capital, preserving culture and creating jobs.

This webinar is for impact investors and financial professionals from family offices, foundations, non-governmental organisations, charities and social enterprises. You will learn how to deploy and blend capital across the impact finance ecosystem and how to leverage indigenous capital.

Why indigenous capital matters:

  • Indigenous communities protect 80% of the earth’s remaining biodiversity and 25% of total above ground carbon stored in the world’s tropical forests.
  • 1.7 million indigenous people live within indigenous territories covering around one-third of the Amazon land area and have a critical role in conserving the rainforest.
  • Amazon indigenous territories and protected areas store well over half (58%; 41,991 metric tonnes of carbon) of the region’s above-ground carbon.
  • From India to Peru, indigenous women are less likely to use healthcare facilities for childbirth because of discrimination, mistreatment and a lack of respect for cultural practices.
  • Life expectancy of indigenous people is up to 20 years lower than non-indigenous people worldwide.
  • In Latin America, despite the major expansion of basic services, indigenous populations’ access to sanitation and electricity is 15% and 18% lower respectively than others in the region.

As leaders in social finance, each speaker will share their unique vantage points:

  • Dawson Her Many Horses, Managing Director at Wells Fargo, is one of two bankers in the United States to manage a multi-billion-dollar tribal portfolio.
  • Jeffrey Cyr, CEO of Raven Indigenous Capital Partners, created the Raven Indigenous Outcomes Fund which is recognised as one of the top 25 transformative funds.
  • Aldo Soto, co-founder and Managing Director of Amazonia Impact Ventures, was recognised by the World Economic Forum Tropical Forest Commodity Challenge as a global leader in providing indigenous communities and their partners access to finance and technical assistance to sustain farms and forests.
