Peter has been writing independent research about private equity (buyouts) since 2010.
His work has been published by academic journals, think tanks and a global accounting firm. It has received favourable comments from the Financial Times and The Economist.
Previously, Peter spent 25 years in mainstream finance. He worked mostly as a credit analyst, first in New York and then in London, where his last two roles were at Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley. This career exposed Peter to private equity from the mid-1980s. He analysed his first leveraged buyout in New York in 1985.
Since leaving mainstream finance, in addition to his private equity research, Peter has worked as both a consultant and fund manager in the world of 'double bottom line' investing. He is currently an investment director at Social and Sustainable Capital LLP in London.
Peter has also written a think tank report on pensions. He writes occasionally for both the general and financial media and is an experienced speaker on finance. Peter is a trustee of two small charities that support beneficiaries in north London and the former Yugoslavia, and he is a former chair of governors at a primary school.
Research
Peter’s research deals with private equity (meaning buyouts). It focuses on how fund managers and asset owners measure gross returns at the level of the individual buyout. Peter believes this area has implications for several groups, including asset owners, the media and policymakers.
He has created a proprietary database of mostly UK buyouts, dating back 30 years. This uses publicly available data that come primarily from the UK’s Companies House. It analyses in detail both the operating performance and the gross investment returns of about 550 individual buyouts.
