Profile

Nick Borwell is a highly experienced major programme director and a leader of organisations facing complex challenges. He has worked in the private and public sectors, most notably in defence, central government and health.

Nick is currently the Principal of the Civil Service Leadership Academy. Until early 2019, Nick was Director of the Government’s Project Delivery Profession within the Infrastructure and Projects Authority (IPA) in the Cabinet Office. He is on secondment from Mott MacDonald.

During his tenure with IPA, Nick transformed the Government’s capability and capacity for delivering projects. A key plank of this success was the development of the Major Projects Leadership Academy and its associated programmes delivered by Saïd Business School.

Prior to joining Mott MacDonald as Technical Director for Programme Management, Nick was Serco’s Programme and Transformation Director for Defence Business Services. This programme created the largest shared service centre in Europe.

Nick has also served in senior roles at BT, including Chief Operating Officer of Portfolio and Service Design and Head of the Project Management Profession for the whole company.

He left the British Army in 2005, having served a full career in the Infantry and as a staff officer. He was commissioned into the Duke of Wellington's Regiment and commanded it from 1999 to 2002.

Nick has an MSc in Major Programme Management from Saïd Business School.
