As an Assistant Professor of Strategy at the ESMT Berlin, Matthias Qian conducts research into how startups leverage artificial intelligence technology to create a competitive advantage.

In his research projects, Matthias integrates new advances in machine learning technology for the processing of large-scale text corpora. His research began during his eleven-year tenure at Oxford beginning in 2012. His research has won the best paper award in the Journal of Professions and Organizations. He has also published in Health and Place and Harvard Business Review.
