Profile

Dr Gail Carson in the past 4 years has concentrated on strategy for international networks to guide their evolution and mitigate the uncertainty the pandemic has contributed to.

For the past decade she has worked across a number of scientific, preparedness and response networks. Training as an infectious diseases doctor opened up opportunities to work with WHO preparing and responding to outbreaks.

Currently Gail is the Director of the international clinical research network – ISARIC and is employed by the University of Oxford. Additional roles are Chair of GOARN ( a WHO network of partners) and chair of the WHO EURO preparedness 2.0 technical advisory group.

Following her distinction in the Diploma of Organisational Leadership at Saïd Business School in 2017, she appreciates the benefits of being exposed and working alongside colleagues from other sectors for example the sporting sector.

Research

ISARIC is a federation of hospital based clinical research networks with sites in 130 countries, which has been in existence since 2011. ISARIC has responded to a number of epidemics and the pandemic resulting in multiple consortium publications. For example, its Covid-19 observational database has nearly 1 million patient records of severe cases.

Teaching

Gail has run a simulation exercise on outbreaks for the International Health Masters course at Oxford for nearly 10 years. The current focus is on a one health related theme. This exercise has seen support over the years from WHO, WOAH, LSE, ISARIC and GOARN.
